I said that to a client yesterday, “I will not help you find your authentic voice.” She chuckled, and said, “Oh! That’s what I thought what vocal coaches did.”

I smiled that smile I get when I am gonna preach a thing. You may be familiar with it. It’s a smile I love to give, knowing that I am about to reframe a concept or self-perception that will lead toward a more embodied vocal experience. A tool I use to create wonder.

Her eyes lit up. “I suppose that whatever voice I have in this body is already authentic. After all, whether I like it or not, it’s mine.”

“Amen, sister. Amen.” She got it.

The word “authentic” in voice coaching/teaching seems to be ubiquitous. It gnaws at me.

It gnaws and gnaws because, for me, the word “authentic” is inaccurate.

I will not help you, dear client, find your authentic voice, because it’s already there.

When I have the honor of digging out the weeds that have strangled the roses of your voice, I can’t somehow make your voice more authentic – the real voice is there, weeds notwithstanding.

What results I can provide? That your sound, your prosody, your tone, where you breathe, and break, and orate will parallel with your truest intent.

Your voice will be honest, unashamed, expressed without asking permission, self-assured, at peace with itself.

We will find your voice a place to stand that is deep and dependable and grounded.

Yet, it will be a pliable voice. Supple and consistent.

It will represent your brand and your message in consonance.

Your voice will be a physical experience that is entwined with the messages of your podcasts, workshops, keynotes, songs, and character you play.

Alas, we will not find its authenticity. Because it’s already there.
