Airport Wisdom

Upon arrival at Sacramento International Airport, a curious thing happened.

The self-check-bag-drop area was packed. People were waiting in long lines in order to get to the little kiosks, shifting their weight and their bags. Children were distracting parents. Business persons were fumbling with cell phones.

The Full-Service line, however, was empty.

“Okaaaaaaay,” I thought. “Maybe something is wrong. Why would no one be in line?”

Skeptical and ready to be turned away, I cautiously headed over to the Full-Service desk.

That’s when cheerful Amaya called me right up to the desk.

“I thought you may be closed.” The quizzical tone of my voice must have sparked her interest. She raised a well-shaped brow.

“Funny, isn’t it? Some people just assume they have to do it all themselves. Life has always gotta be hard. And when it’s not hard, they just don’t believe it. It’s amazing how people stand their own way of getting going.”

As I headed to the gate, I thought of students and clients and myself.

In the quest to get going toward our goals, we look to the way that feels like control; seems faster.

We assume we’ll have to wait for the best option, so we ignore the option that offers help.

We overlook the full service in front of us, and in doing so, make our ways longer and more difficult.

Taking a step back away from our assumptions

would do us a lot of good.

Thanks, Amaya. I needed that more than you know.
