You’ll have to bear with me.

This next series of posty-mails is a mash up of my story with some old fashioned advice. It’s gonna take a few weeks to get through the nitty-gritty. Think of it as a rehearsal: It’s kinda redundant at times, then BAM, you have a really good production number.

I couldn’t decide whether to call the series:
“Stuff No One Tells Us About Success”, or
“All of the Crapoola Before the Moola”,
so you pick for yourself.

Have you seen this inspirational office poster with the giant iceberg?

Inspirational office poster with an iceberg

Thought so.

What I love about it, is that it is true. What I do not love about it, is that it is SUPER vague.

What the heck is “hard work?” What does “courage” actually look like? Who defines what a “sacrifice” is, and what if I don’t have “late nights”? Does that mean I am not really a success?

I want to give you specifics… tell you what these underwater attributes look like in the performing arts, and what they look like in my story, so you can get some tangible goals going and have realistic expectations.

Start by chewing on this, an IRL definition:

SUCCESS
is
Paying Bills Doing Things You Love.

Many clients come to me with this definition: Success is going to Broadway, or singing at the Met, or landing a lead on a TV drama, or…

When we limit ourselves to that definition:

  1. We won’t feel successful.
  2. We don’t love this.
  3. We need to change.

I’ll tell you why next week… and you can bet it has to do with hard work, risk taking, and late nights.

I know! I said I was going to tell you all about my mimicking, and how it pretty much broke my mojo. And I will. Not yet though. Wait for it…
